Manufacturers in the Denim Zone at Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics were responding to the global outcry against sandblasting - a process used to artificially age fabric - by developing innovative treatments, effects and recycled materials. Over recent months, retailers and haute couture fashion houses alike have been under increasing pressure to outlaw the sandblasting process, attributed to the deaths of garment workers in Turkey and Bangladesh. Sandblasting involves workers firing sand under high pressure at jeans to give the denim an aged effect.
