Lower superfine wool production expected in 2011/12

The latest estimates show a decline in production of Australian superfine wool this season of 33% for under 16.5 Mm, and of 27% in the 17.6-18.5 um range, reflecting a diversification to meat or dual purpose types and, to some extent, the broadening of the clip due to better seasonal conditions in eastern Australia. With predictions of a normal spring season in superfine growing areas and better lambing percentages, coupled with the improvement in superfine wool prices, flock rebuilding can be expected. However, the running of wethers for wool production is unlikely to increase due to continuing high mutton prices.
