Surge of orders at Harris Tweed Hebrides

Ian Angus Mackenzie, chief executive of Harris Tweed Hebrides, has said that the company is heading for its busiest year so far, following a major surge of early orders. Harris Tweed Hebrides, which produced its first tweed seven years ago after re-opening the Shawbost mill on the Isle of Lewis, now sells fabric to more than 60 countries, with around 75% of the mill's total output exported, according to the company. Harris Tweed Hebrides fabric has featured prominently in this year's collections from a number of leading designers including Chanel, Ermenegildo Zegna and Lardini. The company employs 90 people at Shawbost and provides work for over 120 home weavers. Commenting on the work involved in meeting the recent rapid increase in orders, Mackenzie said: "The response from both mill workers and weavers has been superb."
