John Smedley consolidates in efficiency drive

British luxury knitwear manufacturer John Smedley has announced that it is to close its Clay Cross factory, which employs 47 people. The company currently operates across three manufacturing sites - Clay Cross and Lea Mills in Derbyshire, and Armthorpe near Doncaster. Speaking to Twist about future plans for the company, managing director Ian Maclean said that rough make-up operations such as linking and seaming are currently done at Clay Cross. "These will be done the same in future, just at Lea Mills instead of Clay Cross - the two factories are only nine miles apart," he said.
