Actions for sustainable employment in the UK textile industry

Over the last few decades, UK manufacturing industries have gone through intense change. Manufacturing has experienced significant transformation as a result of globalisation; it has been the subject of an intense international reorganisation driven crucially by businesses' offshoring strategies. The relocation of activities away from the domestic market is eroding the skill base. In addition, technological change has not only heavily affected the stock of workers employed in manufacturing but, more importantly, impacted on the nature of skill demanded. While new, cutting-edge technologies have displaced certain occupations, they have created new job opportunities. Technology-rich roles offer significant prospects for companies' performance and regional development.
