Future protection

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption to Peru’s important camelid fibre sectors. Its large alpaca textile industry has suffered, but there is maybe more concern about the impact on the smaller and more vulnerable vicuña industry. Peru is the leading producer worldwide of vicuña. Out of the 12 tonnes of the fibre that can be spun into yarn annually globally, 10 tonnes came from Peru in 2019 (most recent data available), according to the country’s ministry of agrarian development and irrigation. In that year, 290 organisations in Peru made profits of about US$3m from this rare fibre. The Ayacucho region, in the Andes, accounts for 34% of national production.
