Scottish cashmere manufacturer Johnstons of Elgin has submitted plans to Scottish Borders Council to create a research and design centre in Hawick. Last year, the company was approved planning permission to relocate its yarn store from its site on Mansfield Road to a site along Mansfield Park in Hawick. This move will free up floorspace at the mill and Johnstons of Elgin has now submitted plans to the Scottish Borders Council to create a research and design centre in its place. "Relocation of the yarn store will free up significant floor area adjacent to the production space," a design proposal by architect company Aitken Turnbull states. "This new centre will accommodate designers, programmers and line writers within an open office environment." Meanwhile, in April Johnstons of Elgin opened a new flagship store on Multrees Walk in Edinburgh. The store covers two floors and sells womenswear, menswear and homeware.
