Uffa Fox was not a shy man. Nor was he particularly modest. After designing a series of winning boats, notably in the International 14 class, and writing a series of highly regarded books, he had established a reputation as a cutting-edge designer and insightful commentator. Lecture tours followed, and his ebullient personality meant that he soon became something of a celebrity in the yachting world, both in the U.K. and abroad. His biographies are full of grandiose claims about his work and his own personal prestige—much of it justified, though like many a big fish in a small pond, he had an exaggerated sense of his own importance.
