Although this simple marking tool may have a more formal name, I have not heard of one. I am happy to use a label that is so descriptive of its function, which is to jump over, or reach around, an overhanging piece to mark the exact projection of the surface that the piece overhangs. Its most common use is to mark the outboard faces of hull planks where they run by the transom, allowing the finished outside corner of the boat to be determined, as shown in the accompanying drawing. A similar marking need arises many other times during construction, for example when trimming deck planks or cabintop sheathing.
