Preservation Through Process

Norway's Strandebarmar boats symbolize the maritime culture of the country's Hardanger region. So do the processes used to create them. Based on the earlier three-strake Hardanger boat, the three- to six-strake Strandebarmar evolved in the early 20th century in the municipality of Strandebarm, on Hardangerfjord, in response to dwindling supplies of high-quality, wide pipe boards—as well as to customers in Oslo who were skeptical of three-plank boats. The Strandebarmar is easier and quicker to build than its predecessors, while still requiring a high level of craft.
