In the fall of 1913, members of Beverly Yacht Club (BYC) asked Nathanael Herreshoff to design a new class of sloop for racing on Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. By March 28, 1914, contracts were signed for four new sloops, and a week later Herreshoff was carving a half model. Three weeks later, the offsets had been tabulated, molds built and set up, and the construction drawings issued. A mere 11 weeks after the contract was signed, the first boat, MINK, was undergoing sea trials, and two weeks later she sailed her first Beverly Yacht Club race. That's only 13 weeks from contract to first race!
