Love is still possible in this junky world: Conversation with Sheree Rose about her life with Bob Flanagan

Bob Flanagan, American writer, poet, comic, musician, and performance artist, was one of the oldest people living with cystic fibrosis when he died in 1996. He claimed he was able to endure more than forty years of physical pain through masturbation, sexual experimentation, and sadomasochism, in collaboration with his lover and mistress Sheree Rose. Their art, writing, photography, and performance have been presented in numerous exhibitions, including Visiting Hours (in 1993, 1994, 1995) and the documentary film Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (directed by Kirby Dick, 1997). In this interview with Tina Takemoto, Rose discusses her life, work, and sadomasochistic relationship with Flanagan. Rose also offers a candid and moving account of her experience of love, sex, loss, and grief inspired by their 16-year relationship.
