Let's Inject Hard Data Into The Driving Debate

Just when the industry thought it had a workable compromise on the use of cellphones while driving, a new development threatens to derail it. There's no winning this one as long as opinion continues to substitute for real data, but there may be a way to come up with some badly needed truth. Led by Verizon [VZ], the industry seems to have decided that the answer is to agree to a handsfree requirement. This at least makes the industry look proactive. Use of handsfree devices allows drivers to keep both hands on the wheel; coincidentally, it also is likely to lead to huge sales of headsets.
