The first part of this paper presents a novel scheme for handovernprovisioning in wireless asynchronous transfer mode (W-ATM) networksnbased on in-band signaling. First, the network architecture andnprinciples of in-band signaling are described, discussing advantages andninteraction with other procedures and signaling techniques. Then,nloss-free protocols for the handover procedures are presented andncompared with existing proposals. The second part of the paper isndevoted to performance analysis of the handover procedures. A generalnmethodology for evaluating handover delays and required buffer capacitynis introduced and exemplified for one of the protocols introducednbefore. Numerical results give insight into the handover procedurencharacteristics and are compared with estimates provided by detailedndiscrete event simulations for validation purposes. Finally, additionalnsimulation results are presented for parallel, concurrent handovers,nevaluating the requirements posed to the network by different handovernprocedures
