Hampton Roads Squadron (Hampton Roads, Virginia)

Activities are starting to perk up a bit for the Hampton Roads Squadron. We started our engines and got them to idle with our first in-person Board of Directors meeting in late May at the NAS Oceana Club. During the pandemic we canceled our monthly luncheons at the Dam Neck Annex Club, and all of our usual social events including an early summer BBQ, a flight suit social at the Oceana based LSO School, the September Oceana Airshow Chalet, and a fun, well-attended Christmas party as a local country club. But we totally struck out in 2020 and through April of this year. Good news is that our engines are beginning to spool up. We are replacing our luncheons with monthly in-person presentations followed by "activities" at the recently reopened happy hour at the Oceana Club. The every-other-week Oceana Airshow meetings are also in full swing, getting ready for the September 18-19 Airshow. The Blue Angels return to Oceana for the first time in 3 years, and the theme for this year's show is "The Blues are Back!" The Thunderbirds performed in 2019 and last year was a "virtual" show, live streamed on local TV and social media platforms. Aircraft actually performed over Oceana, but the air station was closed to the public due to the pandemic. The aircraft performances were split screen, with the ground shots sharing the screen with video from the cockpit. This is an unusual perspective you don't see at a regular airshow. And there were many excellent interviews with representatives from Naval Aviation and the Community.
