Rear Admiral Thomas Francis "Tom" Brown III, U.S. Navy (Retired) passed away on 14 May 2020 at age 87. Rear Admiral Brown entered Officer Candidate School in 1954 and served as a Naval Aviator until his retirement in 1985. In his 343 combat missions in Vietnam, he was awarded a Silver Star and four Distinguished Flying Crosses. His commands included VA-37, CVW-19, USS Caloosahatchee (AO-98,) USS Midway (CV-41), the Military Enlistment Processing Command, CARGRU 1, CARGRU 5, and CTF-77. During his flying career, he amassed 4,843 hours of accident-free flying and 1,017 traps. After retiring from active duty, RADM Brown served in leadership capacities on numerous civic and professional committees and organizations. He was the Commander-General of the Naval Order of the United States, and the President of the San Francisco Council of the U.S. Navy League. One of his most significant post-retirement activities was to serve on the Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Tailhook Association from 1994-1999, restoring that organization to its rightful place as a premier Navy professional organization.Tom's wife Martha, known as "Marty", was a former Navy Nurse, of whom Tom once wrote, "She is the primary reason for my success!"
