A research program in ecology and ecomorphology: The 1999 Margaret Morse Nice Lecture

I am pleased to have this opportunity to contribute to the series of papers that honor Margaret Morse Nice (1883-1974), whose pi- Oneering research on the Song Sparrow (me- Lospiza melodia) was the first longitudinal Study of a population of individually-marked Birds in nature. As a young girl, Margaret was Advised by her father to write at every oppor- Tunity. She took that advice to heart, writing Four outstanding books (nice 1937, 1939, 1943, 1979), numerous research reports, and many hundreds of reviews. It is that record of writing that reveals today how clearly she though about her observations and their im- plications for population biology and behav- ioral ecology.
