On 1 January 1810, Wilson signed the preface to volume 2 of American Ornithology. On 21 January, Robert Carr, his printer, gave him several copies of the volume. On 30 January, Wilson left Philadelphia, walked to Pittsburgh, and thence traveled by boat down the Ohio River to Louisville. From there he walked across Kentucky, bought a horse, and rode the Natchez Trace to New Orleans. He knew he would pass through some of the least explored country he had seen, so he carried with him two shotguns for collecting new specimens, new to him and, he hoped, new to science. He also carried copies of the first two volumes of the American Ornithology for selling subscriptions.
