BIRDS OF THE HORN OF AFRICA: ETHIOPIA, ERITREA, DJIBOUTI, SOMALIA, AND SOCOTRA. By Nigel Redman, Terry Stevenson, and John Fanshawe and illustrated by John Gale and Brian Small. Princeton Field Guide Series, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA. 2016: 512 pages. ISBN: 978-0-691-17289-7. Revised and expanded Third Edition. $45 (paperback).-It consists chiefly of species accounts describing key identification features, plumage variation, similar species, habitat, status, and vocalizations with distribution maps. The species accounts are concise, useful, and informative. The color-coded distribution maps are very effective, especially in clearly distinguishing residents (green) from birds of other status (blue). The illustrations of each species by Gale and Small in plates on the facing pages are superbly and carefully done. I found the spacing and presentation of illustrations in this guide to be less confusing than those in Stevenson and Fanshawe's Birds of East Africa (2002, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey).
