Organizing Wilderness Medicine on a Regional Scale

Wilderness medical groups have formed to address manynspecific needs. However, no current organizations comprehensivelynaddress wilderness medicine as a regionalntopic of interest. The Appalachian Center for WildernessnMedicine was established as a nonprofit regional wildernessnmedicine organization in 2007, and it is believednto be the first organization to address wilderness medicinenwith a comprehensive but regional focus. The Centernserves North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia,nWest Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee. This article addressesnthe history of wilderness medicine regionalization,nthe role of regional groups in wilderness medicine,nand possible activities for regional groups, and suggestsnthat this Center may serve as a model for other regionalizationnefforts.
