Accomplishing the research reported in this special feature took more than doing the science. It required vision, dedication to the resource, commitment to the role of science in managing wetlands, and determination to get the job done. Dr. Arthur Lee Spingarn was the person with the vision, dedication, commitment, and determination that made possible the work on the Nanticoke and Upper Juniata watersheds reported in this special feature. A senior scientist who worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Mid-Atlantic regional office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Art was committed to ensuring that science was integral to the policy he worked to set and implement.
