According to the Office of Water Services, the UK water industry collects, treats and then supplies more than 16 billion litres of water to domestic and commercial customers every day. It then collects and treats ten billion-plus litres of the resulting wastewaters, returning them safely to the environment. Dr Michael Strahand reveals the changing technology behind monitoring chlorine levels in the disinfection process. By Law, the quality of drinking water is controlled under the terms of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989. In order to comply with these strict regulations, the water industry carries out thousands of its own tests for water quality every day and reports any failures to the appropriate body.
