Engineers are continuing to specify thermoplastic tanks for storing sodium hypochlorite even though the tanks pose a "real risk to personnel and the environment". The Technical Committee within the British Plastics Federation's (BPF) Chemical Plant is continuing to raise awareness over the issue, while the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), in its report HSL/2006/21, is also highlighting the risks. The technical committee says that despite widespread publicity and continuing failures of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) thermoplastic tanks containing sodium hypochlorite after short- or medium-term service, engineers are still specifying thermoplastic tanks for this aggressive duty.
