Traitionally, Telemetry has been associated with public utilities and other large organisations. It used to be relatively expensive - the costs of transmitting the data from one point to another often entailed the development of radio networks or the use of private wires rented from a telephone company. The cost of maintaining such networks, including the labour cost of the specialist engineers required, thus made telemetry unavailable to smaller companies / applications.
