Landlocked mali is the seventh largest country in Africa. Its main exports are gold, cotton and livestock, yet it is one of the poorest nations in the world. Since gaining its independence from France nearly 50 years ago, the country has endured droughts, rebellions, a coup and 23 years of military dictatorship. For the past 16 years the country has had a civilian government.
