Among the numerous, often laughable, environmentally friendly claims some people make in our industry is the recently lauded use of external pump mixing to help achieve the goals in AMP5 for energy reduction.rnAt Landia we were pleased with the successful installation of a 3kW unit at a WwTW. For ten years it worked perfectly; no settled sludge -and not a trace of grit in the tank. Despite this, a salesman somehow managed to convince a water company to replace it recently with an external pump mixing system -even though it came with nearly seven times the power requirement.rnNone of us like losing sales, but I know for a fact that this system has not worked properly since the day it went into operation. In some instances an external system may be the answer, but not this one. The tank has never been mixed as it should have been. A submersible mixer would have achieved the task in less than half an hour.
