Broom to the rescue

WHEN AN air valve on a major 600mm diameter water pipe supplying most of Warrington - it caused a high pressure jet of water to shoot 50ft into the air - was damaged recently quick-thinking water engineers used a broom handle to prevent thousands of homes being cut off.The resourceful water engineers from United Utilities (UU) rushed to the scene grabbed a broom, and whittled it to size to create an improvised plug on the damaged valve. The incident, reminiscent of the legend of Hans Brinker, who famously put his finger in the dyke, went unnoticed by the town's population, whose taps remained flowing throughout.
