The bad news about the health of the Chesapeake Bay is that according to data recently released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Chesapeake Bay Program, pollution loads to the waterway were higher in 2010 than in 2009 due to unusually high amounts of rain and snow. The increased precipitation raised the levels of nitrogen by 43M lbs, phosphorous by 7M lbs and sediment from non-tidal rivers by 7M lbs.
