Morrison utilty Services is carrying out one of the UK's largest ice pigging projects to date, having secured a £4M, AMP5 trunk main cleaning contract with Northumbrian Water. The two-year contract will include the enabling, cleaning and rationalisation of about 44km of trunk mains, ranging in size between 8" and 30" in diameter, across the Fenham, Gosforth and eastern areas of Newcastle upon Tyne and North Tyneside. The ice pigging technique will be delivered by ice pigging specialist Aqualogy, to about 20km of trunk mains in the area. Ice Pigging is a method of using ice slurry to clean pipes, typically potable water mains. The ice is normally inserted into the main using existing fittings such as fire hydrants and is pushed along by the mains water, taking with it sediment from inside the pipe.
