Active brazing of ceramic/metal joints with inductive heating in shielding gas

Active brazing can be used in order to manufacture ceramic/metal joints without any preceding metallisation process. However, a high-vacuum furnace is necessary so that the active brazing solder does not oxidise. This entails high fabrication costs, especially for single-item and small-lot products. A more economically viable active brazing process by means of inductive heating in shielding gas was therefore developed. With the aid of preplaced nickel nets, it was possible to realise relatively large brazing-gap widths. This served to keep the residual stresses in the joint at a low level and to achieve an increase in its strength. A parameter window in which the microstructure of the joining zone and the strength of the brazed joint were used as criteria was defined for the brazing process. The joints were characterised by very good fusion and strength — comparable with those of joints manufactured in the high vacuum.
