Twenty years of offshore fabrication - AMEC Process and Energy Ltd

AMEC Process and Energy Ltd L(APEL) based in Wallsend, is the largest employer on the banks of the River Tyne. Part of AMEC plc, the Process and Energy sector comprises offshore fabrication in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, Management and Services in Aberdeen (providing expertise to the North Sea operators) and the Process and Plant facilities in Darlington (servicing the downstream oil and gas refineries and production plants). Engineering and Design offices, which also provide project management and procurement capabilities, are based in London. APEL started over twenty years ago, a little way down river from the present site in the Howdon Yard, and the first contract was the Leman project for Shell in 1972. The project consisted of two modules, one of 700 tonnes and the other 290 tonnes which was considered a prestigious achievement of construction in its day.
