Industry has been plasma arc welding (PAW) since the late 1950s. However, the process's initial growth was hampered by the perception that the process is costly and complex. Technological improvements led the way for greater efficiency, and as the process became more popular, a good value and a healthy return on investment made plasma arc welding part of good business practice — especially in automated operations involving short duration welds of repeated parts, where plasma welding has perhaps had its greatest impact.
