Arc welding began in the 19th century, with the use ofnpermanent charcoal electrodes. The process continued tondevelop until the invention of the clad electrode, at thenstart of the 20th century, which inaugurated the modern eranof electric welding1. The advent of arc welding shieldednby a gaseous atmosphere, which did not derive from thencladding of the addition material, was seen in the 1920s.nThe scarcity of technological resources and research innthis area, however, limited the economic and commercialnviability of this process until the 1940s. From then on,nwith the initial influence of the Second World War, thenprocess began to be heavily researched1,2.nThe MIG process was originally patented in the USAnin 1949 for welding aluminium in a shielding atmospherenof helium, but was only introduced on an industrialnscale in the 1960s3,4. Its development, which due to newnelectronic potential and/or micro-processing technologiesnis exemplified by compact inverter sources, has beennincreasingly steep, and is also based on the trend tongreater automation of processed and the developmentnand use of new metallic alloys1. These factors have notnacted in isolation, but jointly. The reach and maintenancenof a competitive market demands the highest possiblenlevel of (automated) operational productivity, whichnmust have suitable results, and materials with suitablenproperties must be used.
