Installation of a six-axis arc-welding robot boosts productivity and brings in new business for a fabricator of metal ladders. In 1989, the big question for Mel Solomon and Fred Schwartz, co-owners of the Linett Company, Pittsburgh, was: Should they buy a welding robot? At that time, 35 Linett employees manufactured industrial and commercial rolling stock ladders and strapping dispensers. Also, as a subcontractor, the company produced tubular frames for sewer-cleaning devices. Variable production rates and inconsistent weld quality prompted Solomon and Schwartzs' investigaton of welding robots.
