High-speed imaging is widely used in various fields of application. With respect to welding, it is a helpful tool to understand the complicated processes and the influence of the different welding parameters. Classical methods of observation have Used films and high-speed cameras in a time- and labour-consuming process. In order to see the pictures, it was necessary to process the films and to use projectors for viewing. After a change in test setup or process parameters, it took typically at least one day to see the results. In order to limit the overall effort and the consumption of film recording, times were short, often limited to a few tenth of a second. The system described here offers the following possibilities: The pictures and the electric parameters voltage and current are recorded simultaneously. Establishing a correlation between the high-speed images and measured process parameters was typically not possible, but can be achieved using this system.
