Paper manufacturing is a complex process experiencing several differential developments in the past. Examples are the increasing usage of recovered paper and the proceeding closing of the water systems. In 2002 the privately owned Palm paper company invested in a new paper machine for the production of corrugated paper based on 100% recovered paper. The targeted basis weight range is between 70 and 150 g/m~2. One specific process challenge of the new mill is the 100% closed waterloop. However, non-effluent processes may lead to an accumulation of fines and anionic trash in the system. One important optimisation step was the transition from a single-compound-retention-aid to a microparticle system. A substantial decrease in retention aid costs was achieved. Further benefits of the transition were improved fines and anionic trash removal leading to a better machine runnability.
