A strong ridge of high pressure-sometimes referred to in the popular press as a "Dome of Doom"-became entrenched across the South, lifting temperatures above 100°F and curtailing rainfall. Some of the harshest conditions were reserved for the western Gulf Coast region, where June's heat magnified the effects of a drought that began in September 2007. Conversely, frequent and locally excessive rainfall drenched the northern half of the Atlantic coastal plain. Farther west, mild, showery weather prevailed in the heart of the Midwest, while cooler- and drier-than-normal conditions covered the upper Great Lakes region.
