During2010,the United States escaped a major blow from hurricanes, which were quite numerous throughout the Atlantic basin (19 named storms as of this writing, compared with the long-term average of 10 storms per year). How ironic, then, that a great inland storm of extratropical origin developed in October, with a minimum central pressure equivalent to that of a Category 3 hurricane!
