The Weather and Climate of Kansas

Kansas weather seesaws dramatically, blowing in condi-tions each year that vary as much as the wind that sweeps through the High Plains. While Kansans are accustomed to strong southerly winds in advance of cold fronts, they are also ready for challenging wind chills in the wake of arctic fronts and the shifting winds that accompany strong thunderstorms across their prairieland. In fact, this variability in winds transcends just about every weather variable imaginable, sometimes in a single week or even a single day. Temperatures can be well-below freezing in the western part of the state, while the southeast basks in unseasonable warmth. It's not unusual for precipitation to range from severe thunderstorms to heavy snow statewide during some late-winter and early-spring events.
