January 19,1977: The Day it Snowed in Miami

The January 20, 1977, edition of The Miami Herald included a headline whose seemingly impossible statement could have easily been mistaken for an early April Fool's Day joke: "The Day It Snowed in Miami." It was no joke. The headline, as Glenn Schwartz of the National Hurricane Center wrote in the April 1977 issue of Weatherwise, "was nearly as big as it would be for the start or end of a world war." For south Floridians, the news was nearly as historic. It was the first time in recorded history that snow fell across the southern Florida Peninsula, reaching as far south as Homestead, just south of Miami.
