The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season The Most Active Season on Record

The 2020 hurricane season, in terms of the number of named storms, was the most active season on record, with 29 named tropical storms and 1 named subtropical storm for a total of 30 (Table 1 and Figure 1). This surpassed the record of 28 tropical and subtropical storms set in 2005. Fourteen of the 2020 storms became hurricanes, and seven of the hurricanes became major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale), with the latter statistic tying the number of major hurricanes that occurred in 2005. There was also one tropical depression that did not become a tropical storm. These numbers compare to the long-term (1991-2020) averages of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. In terms of the Accumulated Cyclone Energy Index, a measure that considers the strength, duration, and frequency of the season's tropical storms and hurricanes, 2020 was the 13th-most-active season on record since 1851, with a value of 203% of the long-term median value.
