During the winter, powerful cyclones called nor'easters often pummel the east coast, bringing destructive waves, heavy precipitation (often feet of snow), and damaging winds to the Northeastern Megalopolis-a chain of big cities stretching from Washington, D.C., to Boston. Perhaps because of the 50 million or so people who live in this region, east coast storms frequently make national news.
