Alaskan WTP Selects Onsite Alternative to Transporting Chlorine Gas

Golden Heart Utilities (GHU), a subsidiary of Fairbanks Water & Sewer, treats water and wastewater for more than 55,000 people in the greater Fairbanks, AK, area. The water treatment plant (WTP), which is near downtown and along the banks of the Chena River, is designed to treat 8 million gallons per day (mgd), with an average daily flow of 5 mgd. Because of its proximity to the river and to downtown Fairbanks, the strict requirements set by the USEPA and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for storing and handling chlorine gas were a constant concern.
