The main hull of President is of composite construction - that is, iron sides and a wooden bottom. Specifically, this entails nominal 1/4 in rolled iron plates to sides, bow and stern, all hot riveted by hand. Internal vertical joints are supported by single-row riveted butt straps, while external joints were iron caulked where requied. The stem and stern posts were heavily shaped in forged iron. Rolled iron heavy angles were used for internal footing, angles, gunwale supports, deck supports, and knees within the main bow area.
