Volunteers fight Soar weed

A team of volunteers is aiming to eradicate the notorious floating pennywort weed on the River Soar in Leicester. The invasive plant can grow up to 8in per day and regenerate from the smallest fragment, making control of the weed difficult and expensive.rnThe volunteers, from British Waterways, the Environment Agency and Leicester City Council, will be aboard new work-boats which they believe will give access to nooks and crannies where the weed is concealed. The two-day blitz will also tackle species such as Himalayan Balsam, which also grows rapidly on river and canal banks, spreading hundreds of seeds and outcompeting native vegetation.
