With the number of volunteers increasing rapidly, the Inland Waterways Association has said that all restoration and waterway management groups should keep a careful record of how much time their volunteer staff are contributing - even if they are not receiving any outside funding. "Most funding agencies require applicants to make a contribution towards their project costs," said an IWA spokesman. "This can sometimes be in the form of volunteer-time expended on the scheme. As well as time spent on practical work, it can also include more diverse work, such as historical research and meetings."
