The country's favourite retired TV reporter, John Sergeant, has been spotted out and about during the summer, filming a new ITV series about the canals. Called Barging Around Britain with John Sergeant, the eight-part series explores the length and breadth of Britain's waterways. It is due to air later this year. The producers say it is "an exploration from the top to toes of our picturesque country; from the gentle downs of Somerset in the south, to the dramatic splendour of 'the world's most beautiful shortcut', the Crinan Canal". Ian Lamarra, a director of production company Alaska TV, was clearly thrilled to have the veteran reporter aboard. He said: "John is enthusiastic about the subject. He's even sleeping on the barge!"
