Last month, we ventured as far back as the 1850s, following journalist John Hollingshead as he journeyed aboard a fly-boat travelling from London to Birmingham. Having left the clutches of the capital, our intrepid traveller was now enjoying the fresh air of the open countryside as he headed north on the Grand Junction Canal. Patient anglers who had bought tuppenny rail tickets from Whitechapel or Bethnal Green - "unshaven and unwashed, in ragged clothes and dirty shirts" - perched behind the towpath whenever a horse and boat passed.
