MEMBRANE MAGIC - DESALTING BY FORWARD OSMOSIS

Personal packs capable of removing all impurities from water, including salt, have been perfected that use simple, truly low pressure osmosis. The water from the feed side of a special hydrophilic membrane passes to a concentrated sugar solution. The resulting product water is in the form of an energy drink. Large-scale variations of the technique based on sugar recovery by reverse osmosis, or the use of different solutes that can be recovered from the spent draw solution and recycled have been reported in the literature.
