The Guide to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan was released on 8 October, 2010 by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA). It is a critical document for the whole country, as the Basin is the source of around 40 per cent of our food -but it is especially critical for those of us within the Basin, and for the city of Adelaide. The great hue and cry from irrigators and others who have been identified for reductions in their caps on water diversions was expected, but the harsh reality is that there was no choice. It was necessary: firstly to fix the over-allocation problem, particularly in NSW and Victoria; secondly to address the reduction in flows due to climate change; and thirdly to improve the river systems' environmental health, which is essential for all water users.
